Trail Adopters are stewards and advocates for a section of trail within the BAT system. They serve as “eyes and ears” for the entities that own/manage the trails and lands that they traverse. Adopters perform an essential service: helping to maintain a safe high-quality experience for trail users and keeping the land managers informed about trail condition and use. Where feasible, adopted trail sections will be reasonably short to keep the load light.
Volunteers may choose to adopt multiple sections. Multiple individuals may also share sections of trail, which is especially helpful on heavily-used trails. Trail Adopters visit and maintain their trail sections at least three times during the snow-free season: in spring by May 15th, summer by August 1st, and fall by October 1st. They perform basic trail maintenance (picking up litter, removing brush, raking leaves from the tread, and clearing encroaching vegetation, etc.). If they identify work that requires substantial action or that they are unable to perform themselves, they will notify the Trails Subcommittee Chair by email to bayfieldareatrails@gmail.com.
Adopters will provide a brief written report to the Trails Subcommittee with their findings and activities on the trail section after each visit to the trail. A Trail Condition Report form will be available to streamline reporting. This information will be shared with the BAT Committee members to provide timely reporting of issues that require substantial action, pose safety concerns, or impact resources. Annually in March & April, trail adopters will be recruited and assigned to one or more trail sections.
